The Copenhagen metropolitan area is currently a unique laboratory of contemporary architecture in the Nordic Countries. The Gemini silos and VM Mountain represent new housing concepts but they are really only the tip of the iceberg. The new Opera House, the Royal Library extension, the Black Diamond and the new Royal Danish Playhouse are reshaping the face of the Copenhagen dockland area. Urban planning, environmental construction, cultural buildings and especially the new waterfront housing projects are all excellent sites to visit. High quality of building has always been a characteristic of the Danish way of life and perfectly exemplified by many school buildings and care facilities for the elderly. Obvious classics of Danish architecture include Arne Jacobsen’s SAS Royal Hotel and the Bagsværd Church by Jørn Utzon. Copenhagen and its environs offer a celebration of architectural and urban planning excellence.
