Tokyo and Kyoto

Dynamic metropolises and unique heritage

Japan can almost be considered to consist of two countries: a country with immensely dynamic metropolises, and a country of beautiful, traditional rural areas. Modern architecture in Japan follows international trends, but also relies on the country’s cultural heritage.

Dynamic metropolises and unique heritage

Tokyo, with its skyscrapers, is a sight in itself. In the capital of Japan, you can learn about sustainable high-rise construction, such as the Toranomon Hills skyscraper. Tokyo also has impressive old and new museum buildings.

The shapes and forms of Japanese architecture are inspiring. New expressive constructivism, in which structure determines beautiful, sustainable architecture, is regarded as a link between Nordic and Japanese architecture. During your study tour to Japan, you will see modern classics, such as the Nakagin Capsule Tower, designed by Kishō Kurokawa, and the buildings designed by Tadao Andō and Toyito Ito, in which the use of light and concrete are emphasised.

Interesting agencies include the international SANAA agency, which has designed the minimalist 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, among other sites. Japan also has interesting examples of ecological construction and the renewal of the old wood construction tradition.

Kyoto is a must-visit destination and is easy to include in a trip to Tokyo.
