Madrid

Environmental construction and museums facilitate urban development

The metropolis of Madrid is growing through strategic cultural and traffic projects. It is the third largest urban area in Europe, and some of Europe’s highest tower blocks are located there as well.

Environmental construction for healthier urban structures

Calle 30 is a major project that started in Madrid in the 2000s. It involves the partial relocation of a busy ring road into a tunnel. Various types of park areas were built on top of the tunnel to facilitate healthier urban structures. This resulted in an urban park area spanning several kilometres along the Manzanares river. Pollution and noise from the traffic have decreased, and more pleasant environments have emerged.

Terminal T4 at Madrid-Barajas Airport, designed by Richard Rogers, is an infrastructure project worth seeing.

Public construction

A large number of small-scale public construction projects are in progress in Madrid. These include a model developed for the construction of small healthcare centres that enables variations of the same construction plan to be used for several sites.

High-rise construction

Urban structures in Madrid are reaching for the skies. Paseo de la Castellana is a long street running across the city. Its nearby areas are under continuous renewal. Its landmark is a group of four skyscrapers. Some of them are more than 200 metres high and are among the tallest buildings in Europe.

Museums facilitate urban development

The art scene in Madrid is centred around major museums: Prado, Caixa Forum, Reina Sofía and Museo ABC. Madrid has been strategically developed into a cultural destination, by means of museums designed by internationally renowned architects, such as Jean Nouvel and Herzog & de Meuron.
