Investments in public spaces, innovative architecture and schools

The coastal city of Hamburg is investing in public spaces, parks and green zones. The HafenCity area, which is currently being constructed, and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and IBA housing exhibition, have resulted in inventive, ambitious architecture in Hamburg. The city has also invested in its schools.

HafenCity and Elbphilharmonie

HafenCity is an extensive district emerging in an old harbour area near the centre of Hamburg. Once completed, this water-themed area will have 12,000 new residents and 45,000 jobs, in addition to shops, schools and cultural buildings. Many internationally renowned architectural agencies have designed buildings for the area.

Special attention has been paid to comfortable public spaces. Public, open spaces represent 25 per cent, or 28 hectares, of the area. Public squares, parks and pedestrian promenades are all located by the water. Bricks-and-mortat shops are favoured in the area, to enliven the streets.

The Elbphilharmonie concert hall, one of the key architectural sights in Hamburg, is located in HafenCity. Elbphilharmonie was designed by Herzog & De Meuron. This impressive building creates a new silhouette for the city, with its wavy glass facade rising above the old harbour storehouse.

Investment in schools

In addition to public areas, Hamburg has invested in the high-quality construction and improvement of schools. Such projects have also involved conversions. For example, old hall buildings have been converted into schools.

Innovative development in the IBA area

In 2013, the International Building Exhibition (IBA) was held in Wilhelmsburg in Hamburg under the theme “Cities and Climate Change”. The purpose of the ambitious exhibition was to develop a remote area into an attractive district through supplementary residential construction and environmental projects. The innovative solutions included turning a landfill hill into a source of renewable energy. The integration of the southern and northern parts of the city was supported by means of a local train station and pedestrian bridge.

Energy-efficient construction and renovations

Berlin offers a great deal to learn about energy-efficient construction and renovations. The city is also known for its historic sites.

Energy-efficient construction and renovations

In terms of energy efficiency, construction in Germany has progressed in leaps and bounds. You can visit buildings from the 1960s that have been renovated into energy-efficient buildings. One of the commercial buildings from the 1950s was recently converted into a modern shopping and entertainment centre.

Berlin has always been regarded as a laboratory for construction. Interesting developments are taking place, particularly in Berlin Mitte, with the emergence of next-generation urban buildings for residential, commercial and office purposes. Residential areas in Berlin have been developed with a sense of community in mind. This is reflected in their unconventional division into private and public spaces.

The city has an exceptionally eventful history. The two parts of the divided city were combined in 1989, and an extensive master plan was prepared in the 1990s, which determined the key areas for the development of the city. The Europa-City office district is emerging in the former no man’s land.

Berlin is also a treasure trove of historic sites, from residential areas designed by Bruno Taut in the early twentieth century to the Corbusierhaus building and the monumental Karl-Marx-Allee.
